Tourists staying in Airbnb properties and other short-term rentals in Malta will face a significant increase in the eco-contribution from 2027, with the nightly charge rising from €1.50 to €10. Finance Minister Clyde Caruana announced the increase during the Budget 2027 speech, with the new rate capped at €80 per person per stay. The new charge will apply to visitors aged 18 and over staying in short-term accommodation, including Airbnb-style rentals. This means that a tourist spending eight nights in an Airbnb will pay €80 in eco-contributions, compared to €12 under the current €1.50 nightly rate. Two adults sharing a short-let apartment for seven nights will pay €140 between them, compared with €21 at the current rate. The contribution is charged per person, rather than once per property or booking. The current €1.50 rate took effect in July 2026 and is capped at €22.50 per person per visit. Under the new short-let rate, visitors will reach the €80 cap after eight nights. Meanwhile, tourists staying in hotels and other licensed accommodation will see their eco-contribution increase to €8 per night, capped at €64 per person per stay. Short-let guests will therefore pay €2 more per person per night than those staying in collective accommodation, with a maximum contribution €16 higher. The government expects the revised accommodation eco-contributions to generate approximately €182 million annually. This estimate relates to the accommodation changes, rather than the combined revenue from all the new tourism-related charges. Caruana said the increases reflected both the need to invest in tourism infrastructure and the fact that visitors benefit directly or indirectly from Malta’s energy subsidies. He said Malta was on course to exceed 4.5 million tourists this year, accounting for around 28 million nights, with arrivals and nights expected to rise again in 2027. The increases form part of the government’s Budget 2027 measures aimed at generating more revenue from tourism while addressing the pressures the industry places on Malta’s infrastructure and quality of life. Do you agree with increasing the eco-contribution for tourists staying in Airbnbs?
