@katerynashistory: Anne of Cleves: A Wedding Night That Changed Everything 👑 Things went from bad to worse on Anne of Cleves and Henry VIII’s wedding night. The following morning, Henry reportedly told Thomas Cromwell that he had liked Anne “before not well, but now I like her much worse.” He also claimed that they had been unable to consummate their marriage. Realizing how dangerous her situation could become, Anne reportedly sought Cromwell’s advice in the following months. However, Cromwell was afraid of displeasing the King and could do little to save the marriage. In July 1540, the marriage was annulled after an ecclesiastical investigation. The grounds included its non-consummation and Anne’s previous marriage contract. A diplomat who accompanied Anne from Cleves reported that she was frightened about both her position and her life. Wisely, Anne accepted the annulment and the settlement offered to her, securing her future in England.
