The jury that acquitted professional football player Stefon Diggs today heard testimony from six defense witnesses. They included his chief of staff, Jeanelle "Sunny" Sáles, who saw chef Mila Adams the day of the alleged assault and didn't observe bruising or hear her say she'd been assaulted. The prosecutor tried to discredit her testimony in cross-exam by highlighting her personal interest in Diggs' career, but I don't think it landed. "Is it fair to say that you have a financial interest in Mr. Diggs doing well?" asked Drew Virtue, an assistant district attorney in Dedham, Massachusetts. "What does that mean?" Sáles said. "If he does well, do you do well?" Virtue asked. "I think we collectively do well," Sáles answered. "Even outside of financially, is he a good boss?" Virtue asked. "Yes, he's great," Sáles answered. "Do you want to continue working for him?" Virtue asked. "Yes," Sáles answered. "Nothing further," Virtue said. In re-direct, Diggs' lawyer Andrew Kettlewell noted that Sáles said she sometimes drove Diggs' Porsche. "Would you lie under oath to get to drive the Porsche and work for Mr. Diggs?" Kettlewell asked. "What does that mean?" Sáles said. "Is part of lying under oath your job to do?" Kettlewell asked. "What? I'm sorry," Sáles said. "Is your job to lie. Or would you be truthful?" Kettlewell asked. "I'll be truthful," Sáles answered. Jurors deliberated for about 75 minutes this afternoon (Tuesday, May 5) before finding Diggs not guilty of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault.
