Elon Musk basically said a bunch of AI computer factories are going to end up half-finished and sitting idle next year, and most of the companies building them are about to run into big trouble. Quick simple explanation… AI needs giant buildings packed with super-expensive computer chips that use a crazy amount of electricity. Everyone has been racing to build these, but a lot of them aren’t done yet. The chips and power systems are sitting there half-built…like ordering a huge pizza and only getting the crust. That unused stuff is what people are calling “stranded compute.” The companies most at risk are the specialized ones called “neoclouds.” These are companies that mainly just rent out AI computing power and don’t have a lot of other businesses bringing in money Examples include CoreWeave, Nebius, Crusoe, Lambda, Nscale, and others that started as crypto-mining companies and switched to AI (like IREN or Applied Digital) There are over 200 of these kinds of companies Recently, banks and lenders have mostly stopped giving loans to any company that doesn’t already have solid money coming in from something other than AI data centers No loans means a lot of these companies can’t finish their buildings or buy more chips Elon compared it to little fish (guppies) getting eaten…most of them will fail, get bought cheap, or merge. A few stronger ones might make it, but not many SpaceX is different. It just borrowed $40 billion for chips because it’s a solid, trusted company with other real businesses that already make money…mainly Starlink internet and rocket launches The big tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are in a similar position. They have tons of other revenue, so they can keep building their own AI computer centers while the smaller specialized companies struggle Bottom line: 2027 looks messy. A lot of half-finished AI projects and weaker companies will get cleared out. The strong ones that don’t rely only on AI will come out ahead and can probably buy up the leftovers for cheap
