Drive by the food bank and see people lined up in newer cars than me. Half of them are smoking $13 a pack cigarettes. Be happy with what you get...for free

Food bank is not intended to provide everything. It is so you can get the Mac and cheese and the rice a roni and have the money to buy butter, milk and oil.

We grew up poor and just made Kraft Mac & cheese by boiling water with the noodles and leaving a little water to mix the cheese packet with. You dont need milk

I’ve been thinking a lot about this. Help that, while it’s kind there’s some effort, is after all terribly inadequate or useless. There is a housing program here meant to help homeless peeps transition out of homelessness. I discovered they will put up a person in need but it’s 90 days max (most often only 30). Like, how tf is that a help. If I got into a pace but knew how limited my time was, it’d be hard to change the massive amounts of hurdles homelessness brings. Likely just a respite before they’re out on the street again. It’s not enough. People need real conscientious help

Donate money instead! The food bank gets special deals from manufacturers and can stretch a dollar with them far better than you can at the grocery store.

From my experience working in a food bank, people receiving boxes would benefit far more from a small box with a gallon of milk, a dozen eggs, a bottle of cooking oil, and a waiver for a chunk off their electric bill than they do from entire big boxes of shelf stable foods. The shelf stables are easy to get, so they always have some. Perishables are more expensive, both to buy and keep, so that's where they need support.

I gotta provide the fucking can opener too!? I get it, I do, they can be like 30$ for no reason in some places... but literally. they are near infinite uses in a can openers life time... why dont ypu have one already if you use food banks... or idk.. food? next time I donate im including a can opener, but at this point I just wanna donate 100 can openers in spite?

My mom volunteered at a food pantry and the people that actually got paid to be there would go through the donated food and take the “good” stuff and put out the rest for the people that needed it. It was very disappointing to know this.

you do not need milk and butter to make mac and cheese. use the equivalent amount of pasta water instead of milk. I do that all the time.
