$Yesterday at Uhuru Park, my family and I experienced something no one should ever have to go through. We were physically harassed, assaulted and intimidated simply because we are Somali and Muslim. It started when a group of men approached where we were sitting and began taking pictures of my mother, who was simply minding her own business. When she asked them to stop photographing us, they refused and continued. When we tried to stand up for ourselves and ask people passing by for help, instead of helping us, they sided with the men and joined in the discrimination. We were told to go back to our own country, that Somalis and Muslims had no place in this country, and that people like us shouldn’t be here. I started recording because I wanted to document what was happening. But what you see in this video is only a fraction of what happened. The moment I stopped recording, things escalated. They became physically violent, and we were assaulted. It got to a point where, out of genuine fear for our safety and our lives, we felt we had no choice but to apologise, even though we had done absolutely nothing wrong. Imagine being in a public park, with your family, doing absolutely nothing to anyone, and finding yourself in a situation where you have to apologise to the very people assaulting you just so you can make it home safely. What hurt even more was watching people who witnessed what was happening choose to side with our attackers simply because of our identity. Being Somali does not make us less Kenyan. Being Muslim does not make us less deserving of dignity, safety and respect. Nobody should have to prove that they belong somewhere, and nobody should be subjected to violence because of their ethnicity or religion. We deserve to feel safe in public spaces just like everyone else. Our mothers, our families and our communities deserve protection, not intimidation. This is not okay. Xenophobia and Islamophobia should never be normalised or excused. No one deserves to experience this. #uhurupark #xenophobia #kenyantiktok🇰🇪 #harassment$
