The Battle of Bakhmut (2022–2023) was one of the longest, bloodiest, and most devastating battles of the Russo-Ukrainian War. What was once a peaceful Ukrainian city of around 70,000 people became a battlefield of unimaginable destruction, where Ukrainian defenders fought against overwhelming Russian assaults for months. Beginning in the summer of 2022, Russian forces, particularly the Wagner Group, launched relentless attacks supported by massive artillery bombardments, tanks, and infantry. The fighting soon turned into brutal trench warfare and deadly close-quarters combat, with soldiers fighting for individual streets, buildings, and sometimes even single rooms. Entire neighborhoods were reduced to rubble, roads became littered with destroyed military vehicles, and thousands of civilians were forced to abandon their homes. Despite ammunition shortages, constant shelling, and the growing threat of encirclement, Ukrainian soldiers continued defending the city under increasingly desperate conditions. Bakhmut became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, with the phrase “Fortress Bakhmut” representing the determination of those who refused to surrender their positions. Both sides suffered enormous casualties as the battle turned into a relentless war of attrition. After months of devastating combat, Russian forces finally captured the city in May 2023, leaving behind little more than ruins. Although Bakhmut eventually fell, its defense became one of the most recognized chapters of the war, remembered for the extraordinary endurance of its defenders, the immense human cost, and the destruction of an entire city.
