Water levels are running unusually high along the coast. Several factors are combining to create a higher-than-normal ocean. One of the biggest contributors is a phenomenon known as a Kelvin wave — a massive, slow-moving pulse of warm water associated with El Niño that erupts along the coast, temporarily raising sea levels. On top of that, warmer ocean temperatures cause seawater to expand, a process known as thermal expansion, adding even more height to the ocean. In addition, we have astronomically high tides, driven by the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun. These three factors have aligned, pushing high water farther inland than usual. The result is an increased risk of coastal flooding, beach erosion, and water spilling onto low-lying roads, parking lots, and waterfront areas — even without rain or a major storm. With water levels already running high, the timing of upcoming high tides and any additional swell or storm activity will be especially important to watch. If you surf, you have seen firsthand that the tides are higher than average. The graph shows the astronomical tide versus the actual tide level we are seeing. Tides are currently running from .8-1.5 feet above average. Imagine what this could look like in late November and December if we have a huge swell along with these tidal factors aligning again. #KELVIN WAVE

. . . #AquíNadieSeRaja
