According to NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya, when he saw him on Thursday, "he couldn't speak or open his eyes although he was still alive but struggling to wake up." He was an electrical engineer, born April 1, 1985. He served Busiro South in Wakiso in the 11th Parliament (2021-2026) on the NUP ticket. Matovu had just lost the January 15, 2026 election to NRM's Kenan Opio — 36,497 votes to 30,487 — and had gone to court. He was asking for DR forms from 102 polling stations in Nkumba, Kisubi and Kitala to prove rigging. On September 25, court dismissed his application for more documents, saying it was not specific enough. But the main election petition had just started — Justice Johnson Karemani began hearing it on October 16. Six days later, Matovu was dead. Bobi Wine wrote: "He served as MP for Busiro South and had his victory robbed at gunpoint in the January election. Very shocking news! May God strengthen all of us." In December 2025, NUP reported Matovu and his team were assaulted by men in uniform while campaigning in Busiro. They were treated at Mengo Hospital. Matovu's death adds him to a painful list NUP calls its fallen soldiers: - November 2020 Massacre: Over 54 Ugandans shot dead in Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono after Bobi Wine's arrest in Luuka. - Frank Senteza (Dec 27, 2020): Bobi Wine's bodyguard, run over by a military truck in Busega while protecting a colleague. - Rita Nabukenya & Daniel Kyeyune: Youth from Nansana, reportedly shot by security during People Power mobilizations. - Yasin Kawooya: Shot in Kayunga during 2020 campaigns. - 10 comrades in Butambala (Jan 15, 2026): Killed inside Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi's home where they had gathered to protect votes. Fired through a garage door. - Paul Musoke – Burnt in his house: On August 22, 2026, attackers nailed his door shut from outside while he slept and set his house ablaze. Neighbors rescued him with severe burns. He was rushed to Kiruddu Hospital and died 7 days later on August 29, 2026. No suspects have been named to date. - 30 killed after 2026 election:* Army Chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba himself posted on X that security had "killed 30 NUP terrorists" and detained 2,000 after the disputed vote. Many more abducted from Kamwokya, Makerere Kavule and never returned. Matovu's death comes when Ugandans are already asking: _Why Uganda, Lord?_ Roads are full of potholes and sewage flows in open trenches in Bwaise, Katanga, Nakawa. KCCA reports a Shs325b shortfall for roads and drainage. Police who should protect are feared for brutality and extortion. And mob justice is normal — a thief is burnt alive while billions are stolen and celebrated. Matovu will be remembered not as a man who lost an election, but as a soldier who died in battle, with his court file still open. Rest in power comrades.
