The 2004 Nimitz Encounter was a highly credible military UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) sighting involving the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group off the coast of Southern California. Navy radar operators on the USS Princeton tracked anomalous aerial targets descending tens of thousands of feet in less than a second, prompting fighter pilots Commander David Fravor and Lieutenant Commander Alex Dietrich to intercept the object. Upon arrival, the pilots witnessed an object hovering over churning white water that mirrored the flight path of their F/A-18F Super Hornet before instantaneously accelerating away at hypersonic speeds without any visible wings, exhaust plumes, or sonic booms. Captured on thermal camera footage by a subsequent pilot, the incident remained largely classified until it was leaked and later declassified by the Pentagon, serving as a primary catalyst for modern congressional hearings into unexplained military aerial encounters
