it is so deeply important that the media shows these situations of how even the most law abiding individuals who took every single precaution possible will still be targeted just because of the color of their skin. but i also feel like it’s important to mention that no one should have to be the perfect civilian to survive. it’s hard to explain this within the word count but she shouldn’t have to be a lawyer, those boxes should have to have been only shoes, and she shouldn’t have had to talk him down slowly and calmly like a professional therapist to survive a casual drive home (even though, despite this, he still shot her). even if they had copped the slightest whiff of an attitude—if they were tired, or hangry, or yelling, or crying—whatever the reason, there is no reason ever for a member of law enforcement to murder someone without an imminent threat to life. i feel like we need more portrayals with deeper complexity or depth to fight the “perfect victim” complex that destroys the empathy and righteous anger that our society desperately needs when the average person who has any semblance of an emotional response is brutalized.
