ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Six people were killed Friday night when an SUV struck a Road Ranger truck and both vehicles caught fire on Florida’s Turnpike, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The crash happened at about 9:31 p.m. near mile marker 252. A 2023 Chevrolet Traverse was traveling north in the inside lane as the Road Ranger truck moved from the median toward the outside shoulder, FHP said. The Road Ranger had been assisting with an earlier crash and was responding to a request to help a box truck, according to troopers. Witnesses told investigators the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed without its headlights on. The SUV’s driver failed to avoid the Road Ranger truck and struck its right rear, according to FHP. Both vehicles ran off the roadway and became engulfed in flames, troopers say. The SUV’s driver and five adult passengers were trapped inside and pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities had not been confirmed by FHP at the time of this report. The Road Ranger driver — a 28-year-old Kissimmee man — suffered minor injuries and was not taken to a hospital. As investigators continue to piece together what happened, advocates for driver awareness are calling for change. Former State Representative Irving Slosberg is the founder and chairman of Dori Saves lives, a nonprofit dedicated to traffic and road safety.
