On March 26th, 2016, Hokkaido got its first bullet train. On the same day, the same railway closed a station whose only regular passenger had just graduated high school. The station was called Kyū-Shirataki, in the farmlands of northeastern Hokkaido. It was a wooden shelter on a dirt platform, with a single bare lightbulb, and a bench. The road crossing nearby was called Cemetery Crossing, because it was on the road to the local cemetery. The hut was built by hand in 1947 by local families. For three years, an 18-year-old girl named Kana Harada took the 7:16 train from here to get to high school (it was the only train of the day going in that direction). Every morning, her father drove her to the shelter. "once you get used to it, it was surprisingly fine" she told the Sankei newspaper about the commute. Overseas, a post comparing her station to Harry Potter's Platform 9 3/4, shared tens of thousands of times, said JR Hokkaido, the railway company, had kept the station open for her. They never said that. In fact, she'd heard months earlier that they were going to close it when she graduated. On March 1st, neighbors came out onto the snow-covered platform to bid farewell to the last student of the area as the train departed. "The station gave us precious time to talk, just the two of us. It was hard work, though." her father said as he watched the train disappear. JR closed the station three weeks later, as part of a systemwide schedule change on the island. The first sentence of the document outlining the changes says the schedule revisions were made to coincide with the opening of the bullet train. It also adds three more round trips a day to the express service that connects to the bullet train. On page 9, they take away her station. That summer, the community in the neighborhood that built the shelter planned to move it and preserve it. But the cost JR was charging to move it was much higher than they expected, and in October, the community looked on as it was demolished. Her graduation didn't determine the timing; the bullet train did, and she happened to graduate just before it arrived. On this line, JR was spending 327 yen for every 100 yen it took in, and as they made changes to the timetable across the island to make one new line work, the stations they gave up were just like hers: ones where the last student just walked away.
