@vt: Back in January 2010, five-year-old Juliette Lamour and her two-and-a-half-year-old sister Sophie turned up at a hockey game in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, with their pink “sharing” piggy bank. A devastating earthquake had just hit Haiti, and the local branch of the Canadian Red Cross had set up a table to collect donations. The sisters emptied their piggy bank and handed over everything inside: exactly $61.38. A local news site snapped a photo of the moment, and the story might have ended there. But 13 years later, Juliette had just turned 18 when her grandfather suggested she buy a lottery ticket for fun. It was the first one she’d ever bought, and she promptly forgot about it. Then, while at work, she heard that someone in town had won the $48 million Lotto 6/49 jackpot. She checked her ticket, and it was her. At the time, she became one of the youngest people ever to win such a huge prize in Canada. Rather than quitting everything, Juliette said she planned to use the money to go to medical school, saying she could now chase that dream “without worrying about grants or loans.” And yes, she still has the piggy bank. #vt
