u guys r missing the point. Antman hasn't seen either of them since endgame this is his first time interacting with them. he actively always called Steve cap so instinctively did it and then corrected it it has nothing to do with race

Hard disagree. This isn't about Sam's worthiness like the whole story in Falcon and Winter Soldier. Context and intent matter. This is just a joke, no one is saying Sam isn't Captain America

People… stop explaining the joke or why you think it’s good. This video isn’t interrogating Ant Man or the joke. It’s just about the necessity of its existence. I’m deleting any comments that clearly aren’t paying attention.

people saying "it's not that deep" or "scott has always called steve cap" are overlooking the fact that the 'joke' was intentionally written in by writers, approved, kept in the edit, and then released for marketing purposes. every stage of it was intentional, and that's why it hurts all the more

can I understand the joke probably was innocent in intention? yea, can I in that same beat also wonder how nobody could foresee how that joke would be perceived? yea, I genuinely don't know how you can overlook that [Wilted rose]

“Its just a joke” It’s classic gaslighting. Plain and simple.

I personally think the joke is worse bcos it’s Antman. We no he adores Captain America, so he’s the 1 I expect 2 look up 2 Sam the same way. And again a white middle aged man is the 1 stamping out a POC’s representation & rightfully earned place. 😭

It’s also a cue that both Steve and Bucky get as visibly annoyed as Sam does. They may not GET it, being white, but they understand Sam their friend and are annoyed on their behalf. So if the actors understood enough to react that way, why did the writers not take their cue?

This is what people mean when they get frustrated when people view something through a racial lens when there is none. It's literally just about who is "Captain America". The joke itself has nothing to do with race so stop putting it in there.

The joke is, Scott gets flustered and doesn’t know how to refer to Steve or act around him because he’s star stuck by him. It’s been a running joke since the very moment they met in Civil War. Race has absolutely nothing to do with it

it seems to be a classic marvel scripting thing where it sacrifices character for a throwaway joke. it's always been present from the start but it's become such a pervasive thing since the fandom blew up, where the movies are becoming vehicles for memes and fan service.

It really isn’t that deep. It’s been engrained to Scott to call Steve Cap over years. He last saw him in endgame. He hasn’t interacted with Sam since becoming captain america.

If Sam was white, they’d make the same joke. It’s a simple as that. Steve was captain America last time Scott saw him. Scott in previous films was always excited to meet Steve and to specifically call him Cap. So it’s not surprising at all that he’d make that slip up.

I know I’m a white man so I have nothing substantial to contribute but this feels like reaching. The MCU mishandled Sam Wilson who could’ve been amazing. But he’s not remarkable in any sense. Forgettable even. The fact that everybody knows Steve Rogers because he is Captain America and always will be. He had so much growth in the MCU before passing the shield on. That scene everybody’s mad at was a funny acknowledgment while adding in layers because Ant Man hasn’t seen Steve in a long time.

Scott has never once seen or interacted with Sam Wilson post him taking up the mantle as Captain America. Plus, he has fanboy over Steve Rogers his entire life. It’s not that deep and it fits his character.
