@norbertobriceno: Kinda Interesting Things #367: The Fung Wah Bus, One of the Original Chinatown Buses If you’re walking through Manhattan’s Chinatown, you might come across this “Greetings from Chinatown” mural on Allen Street by artist Victor Ving, filled with little references to the neighborhood. But look closely at the W, and you’ll notice something unusual: a bus that appears to be on fire. This is the story of the Fung Wah Bus, one of the original Chinatown buses. Fung Wah was started in 1996 by Pei Lin Liang, a Chinese immigrant who drove a dollar van between Brooklyn and Chinatown as part of an informal transportation network that connected Chinese immigrant communities across the city, offering an affordable way to get around. Then Liang saw an opportunity to take that idea further. People were asking him how they could get to Boston to visit their children attending college there. So in 1997, Liang borrowed about $60,000 from relatives and bought four vans. The following year, he launched a service between New York and Boston. The idea was simple: keep it cheap. Instead of operating out of an expensive bus terminal, Fung Wah picked passengers up right on the street in Chinatown. At one point, a one-way ticket to Boston cost just $10. And this is how Fung Wah pioneered the Chinatown bus industry in the Northeast. Before long, Fung Wah was attracting passengers from all walks of life, and other companies followed suit. But Fung Wah’s success was eventually overshadowed by safety concerns that would lead to its downfall. I was dating a woman in Boston while I lived in Brooklyn. For a year we took Fung Wah back and forth until she moved down. We’ve been married 20 years.

One time when I took the Fung way too Boston, they overbooked so people had to stand the whole way. At one point they stopped for a restroom break I didn’t dare get off. My buddy Jimmy got off. And he wound up fighting some scary dude over his seat and lost. Jimmy stood the rest of the way and I sat next to the scary guy. On the way back I got to the terminal late and would’ve had to stand so I just bought a $15 Peter Pan ticket and took that instead.
