@vibejapan1: On October 8, five vehicles carrying 13 people, several of them Japanese, drove into the core of Mongolia’s Nömrög reserve, a border zone near China that almost no one is allowed to enter. At 11:55 a.m., the first fire call came in. One of the vehicles had set the dry grass alight as it drove across it, Chinese state media reported, citing a Mongolian outlet. The local border commander had signed off on their entry. The convoy belonged to Mobicom, KDDI’s subsidiary in Mongolia, which says its team was there to inspect the 4G and fiber lines it built for Mongolia’s border guards. Mobicom has been building network infrastructure along that border since 2018. The fire burned for eight days. At one point, 606 firefighters in 60 teams were on the line, and China moved more than 3,400 personnel to its side of the border. By October 12, officials said about 80% of the 1.45-million-acre reserve had burned, and the fire was not declared out until October 16. Mobicom admitted its vehicle started it, and CEO Yasuhiro Ochi apologized to the Mongolian people. Mongolia’s Justice and Interior Minister said the government will pursue responsibility from Mobicom’s staff and the border officers who let them in, and will seek compensation. The Deputy Prime Minister asked whether the group needed to be inside the reserve for work at all. Local media have suggested they went in to hunt, or to fish for the endangered Amur taimen. Police have not confirmed that, and the case is still open.
