Hopefully the company stops thinking excessive profit at the cost of hard working farmers is a good idea. They should make 15% above costs, for research and development and profit. hopefully they'll stop taking the pee

1979 No software, no payments, but no new parts. $1400 paid for this rig. $5k in tires and probably 1k to get it field ready. It runs and drives.

They’re trying to do this with a lot of things, including our cars. Look at how many things they make you subscribe to, or they shut you off.

But the flip side is less incentives for innovation; and if you hammer your U.S. “national champions” you open the doors to foreign champions, which will likely first come by subsidized scale or dumping, and later have the same extraction, service monopoly, and data collection problems added in. Except now that’s all flowing overseas. You might say you won’t support such foreign companies but given say a $5K rig and $5K tires slashed in half and don’t have to build it yourself for 60% of the cost from China— what do you think people will do? My point isn’t that rent-seeking or monopolies/oligopolies are good but that it’s not just about the very local, near-term matters at hand when you have a very complex interconnected global economy. There are tradeoffs, and things one isn’t thinking about such as espionage, national security, geopolitics, the future of U.S. industry, etc.

the worst of it all, is that the farmers are willing to pay for access to the proprietary software for maintenance, Jhon Deere dies not want to sell them access, they want complete control
