“Why don’t Muslims celebrate Halloween?” ‘Muslim Kids Ask’ is back! This is my series where I answer the questions our kids actually ask. Our kids get asked this at school every October, and a lot of them aren’t sure how to answer. So I looked into where Halloween comes from. About 2,000 years ago, the Celts in Ireland and Britain held a festival called Samhain on October 31. They believed that on that night the line between the living and the dead got thin, and spirits came back to walk the earth. People lit bonfires and wore disguises so the spirits wouldn’t recognize them. Centuries later, the Church made November 1 All Saints’ Day, also called All Hallows. The night before became All Hallows’ Eve, which got shortened to Halloween. When Irish immigrants brought the traditions to North America, their carved turnips became pumpkins and going door to door became trick-or-treating. For Muslims, the issue is where it all started. Halloween grew out of beliefs about spirits of the dead and another faith’s holy day. When the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah, he told the people that Allah had given them two better days to celebrate: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Those are the days we go all out for! Your kids can still be kind about it at school. “We don’t celebrate it, but have fun!” is a simple way to answer. Tell me, what does your family do on October 31? Make sure you follow @mylittlealim for more kid-friendly videos like this. #MuslimKidsAsk #Halloween #MuslimParenting #MuslimKids
