@unlocking.the.myst: Kurt Cobain Told Rolling Stone He Was Tired of Being Embarrassed by “Smells Like Teen Spirit” 35 Years Ago Thirty-five years ago, Nirvana released “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The 1991 song helped bring grunge into the mainstream. But its frontman, Kurt Cobain, had mixed feelings about it. In a 1994 Rolling Stone interview, he said, “Everyone has focused on that song so much.” He added, “There are so many other songs that I’ve written that are as good, if not better, than that song.” He said he liked “Drain You” more. It is on the same 1991 album, “Nevermind.” He said, “I love the lyrics, and I never get tired of playing it.” Playing the big hit was a different story. He said he could “barely ... get through” it live. He said, “I literally want to throw my guitar down and walk away.” Cobain also called the song “a clichéd riff.” He said the band meant it as an ironic play on other alt-rock bands at the time. He also admitted where some of the sound came from. He said, “I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it.” He said the band used the Pixies’ sense of dynamics, going from soft and quiet to loud and hard. Then he said, “I’m just tired of being embarrassed by it. I’m beyond that.” He said it just months before he ded by sicide in April 1994. He was 27. Which Nirvana song do you think deserves more love? #KurtCobain #Nirvana #Music #Nevermind #90s
