@invinciblevenus_: Our partner/friend has now promised us grandly that they‘ll change. Do we give them a chance and wait it out? Or do we leave? My personal advice is: leave. They need more time and you two are not compatible. Words don‘t mean anything when no actions follow. @itisadumbdecision #promise #Love #relationshipadvice
they never change, you are so right!! never regretted it

As a person who stayed - she is right. Leave.

They can have a chance, depending on the situation. If you have the conversation about what needs to change, what bothers you etc. and they don't make a lasting effort, then they are gone.

What if there was already a previous breakup a few months ago and a bit of change after but not enough? There was change and he’s trying but things still happen

I was that person. I had a debilitating anxiety disorder that affected our relationship and I was constantly clingy and overly asking for reassurance and affection. I woke up to a breakup text on a random day out of the blue saying it was too much for him, and I immediately put myself in therapy, mental health counselling and worked on myself for MONTHS telling him I would change and be better, but he wasn’t willing to communicate with me it was an issue almost a year in, and he had already moved on by the time I was healed and a new person entirely. I think some people genuinely can change and are willing to once they know there is a problem, but I completely understand not everyone is willing to wait and be present for it until it happens.

RUNNNNN. I knew every single problem we would encounter from the beginning of the relationship, 2.5 years and a ton of damage later, I was 100% right and I completely lost my ability to leave that relationship due to dependency. And then they had the audacity to dump my ass.

He never changed. He thought he could hold onto me after we broke up despite refusing to actually break up with me. I then told him we’re done. Don’t speak to me unless you’re in therapy for emotional abuse.

If I stay I’m losing myself… if I leave. I lose her. It’s an impossible choice I’ve been living. I don’t actually want to leave her. I want this to work. I want to be the man that keeps his promises . The promise to cater for her needs. Never invalidate her emotions. Promise to consider her. Promise to be patient while she’s still navigating things.. The promise to stay when she doesn’t even recognise herself. The man to love her through every version of herself. The thought of walking away makes me feel like I’ve failed her. I’ve lied. Somewhere inside my heart I believe maybe if I’m a better man, if I can be more patient, more loving, more understanding.. more of whatever she needs.. maybe she’ll change? Maybe then she’ll love me how I’m begging to be loved?.. maybe she’ll consider me? Maybe she’ll be more respectful and kinder to me? Maybe I’m not the one? I’m reminded I vowed to never abandon her. To always be there.. All feel like another reason to stay. Even though staying is slowly destroying me. I can accept her pain and try to understand it.. but why does she bleed on me when I’m not the one that cut her?.. I’m giving everything said in this video.. pouring my all.. but I’m so desperate to receive it and I’m hoping.. praying I can one day receive it too. Maybe I’m a hopeless romantic and romantise love.. my love language is sacrifice after all.. I’ll crash and burn for as long as I need too. As long as she gets to keep warm😔

what do you do when theres quite stark financial imbalances in a relationship? my bf half lives at mine and half lives at his parents, doesn’t contribute to rent, bills and a little on food and i feel like i end up going into the whole “well dont tell me what to do in my house thing” when i dont want to but also its hard for me to not to when i don’t feel appreciated in other aspects too. thats not to say he doesnt vastly contribute in other areas but . im struggling really alot and need anyones guidance or thoughts

What about if the change that has to happen is very very hard because it is really deeply rooted in their own perception of themselves. I mean what if they treat themselves miserable and therefore can’t really understand criticism as non dramatic. I don’t know how to address a problem when they can’t see it as neutral and not as blame or the biggest failure. Even tho they can talk about it and take it in an understanding and good way. The person I’m talking about understand’s what I say and often agrees but every criticism still hurts them deeply. And I feel like I can’t address something fundamental (even if it’s not a dramatic problem) if they take it as “I failed and didn’t love them the way I should. I’m the worst person alive.” I need help.

I feel really stupid because for 7 years my boyfriend has been emotionally abusive off and on, he has promised to change sometimes but other times he’s literally said I can’t change. So I’ve heard both! And I’m still here on the same roundabout waiting to get off but I don’t want to put my lovely home up for sale and it’s deviating 😢

He would give me a silent treatment almost everytime we argued. He tried to work on that a bit, but of course it was temporary. And I finally realized after 6 years he would not change, so I left. It was painful but worth. Thank you for speaking about these topics!

As someone who believed this for 6 months (arguments multiple times a month), leave! You don’t have to be the punching bag for a man “trying to change” (takes ages for someone to actually change, even a little).

Nobody changes unless they have done the inner work and majority of people haven’t done the inner work so they will use that access with you to pretend that they have done the work, when reality they don’t care about changing. I think when it comes to change, if you’re the one asking someone else to change, you’re more likely to be expected to change yourself in order to accommodate that change. This is because you’re probably more aware of the situation and its impact than the other person is.
