@livinggenxtra: The physical ups and downs of total knee replacement is real but there can be an emotional rollercoaster as well. Knowing that this can happen and that you are not alone can help get you through those moments. If you are really suffering in this, you need to seek help from friends, family or professionally. Taking care of yourself both mentally and physically is so important when it comes to any joint replacement recovery.

I don’t agree with that emotional thing, I had both of mine done and of course you go through the pain and lack of sleep but I knew if I did what I’m supposed to do as far as the wait time to get better and do the pt, I would be fine

Absolutely. I consider myself very strong and have always been independent and the one others lean on. I’m in week 8 of TKR and man has it been a struggle to sleep and the emotional drain of such. This is not for the weak. So glad I’ve found that I’m not alone in this. I just try to take one day at a time but man this is tough

Month 3 now and it’s been hard mentally and I wasn’t ready for it at all , surgery was good just physio was the issue, not knowing what exercise to do to help me and my knee replacement, it feels sometimes that I have been totally abandoned by my doctors

Hey Tracy, how are you doing? I don’t know if you’re ever told you the kind of word that I do, but I do like a landscaping and gardening maintenance and my case to have both knee replacement. It’s not gonna be easy for me because I have to pay another extra guy to do my jobs until I got recovery from the surgery. I think I believe it’s like almost 3 months for each one if everything goes well what do you think?

I hit the wall 4 weeks post op. All I hear is how ahead of recovery I am, but the pain at night is unbearable. I’m miserable and just sit here looking at my books and crafts and have no interest. Done with tv. Why the night pain?

Month 6 on the right is so weak and painful because of month 2 on the left. Hit the breaking point yesterday because I overdid it in PT and spent 2 days in bed. I’m sick of bed. I’m sick of being in pain. I know I’ll get through this but I’ve had 6 straight months of pain. Grrrrr.

You are so right. I had right knee done January 2026. Left one 3 weeks ago. Pretty down right now even tho my surgeon and PT says I’m ahead of schedule. 117 bend and was walking unassisted 3 days after surgery. It’s mentally taxing however for all the reasons u state.

Absolutely hate the reliance on others. I’m normally extremely independent and on the go constantly. Physically, BP too low, blood oxygen low, slight fever, etc., etc. too many variables outside of my control. The mind starts playing games.

THIS!! The emotional side is something the docs don't warn you about. Im a really postive, strong minded person normally, recovered twice from breaking my back and broken ankle and was absolutely fine, but this recovery is nothing like I thought it was going to be. What gets me the most, and im only on day 16 is the back and forth with thinking you are over the worse. One day every thing is great, no pain, smashing out exercises with personal bests, next day....bang, the pain is back and you can't sleep, the exercises seem like they aren't as good as the day before. Ive started keeping a daily diary/ journal . I write down how I feel, what ive done good or bad, and ALWAYS finish on a positive note or little win that day, no matter how small. I find that really helps. I know I will look back in a couple of weeks and know ive come so far. It really helps

I had my right knee done march 23. I was not prepared for the actual pain and no sleep or the isolation of being trapped in the house. My next one will be spring 2027 so I can sit outside in hopes mental recovery will be better also limiting pain meds in hopes after surgery my body will not be as use to the pain meds and they will actually work.

I’m going through it now at 9 weeks. It’s tough having no social interaction and not feeling like I’m worth anything because I can’t do much. PT is kicking my butt and I’m progressing but so slow that I wonder most days was it worth it. I’m home alone with the dogs all day and just miss life.

I had my 1st TKR May 14, and felt like in some way it was a piece of cake as opposed to what I was fearing it to be. I was pretty happy with how quick my recovery was so I scheduled my 2nd one just last October 8th. Same doctor, and PT therapists and find that at almost 3 weeks out I’m struggling more than the last one. Nothing huge, just expected the “walk in the park” I felt I had with the 1st one. I’m having more knee cap pain than the last one. I resigned to the fact that this is a totally different operation with different results, and it’s ok. I’ll get to where I need to be at soon enough. The hardest part is behind me now and I have to stop beating myself up over it. I’m still way ahead of where my PT guy says I should be. He’s very encouraged of my recovery so far. So, yeah….. emotions can disorient you of your healing process. Each day if one foot in front of the other.

I’m there. I am postop right knee replacement. It was only three weeks on Thursday. Seems like much longer because I’ve been off work since July when I had the left knee done. Knowing that I’m not helping to contribute with bills right now is annoying. Basically my household income has been cut in half.. and it’s been rough

It’s amazing the ups and downs you have. Taking things for granted, two things for me stand out. 1 going up and down stairs “normally” and 2 Doing a full rotation on a bike. The emotional frustration I have when sat on a static bike is real.

Thank you for this reminder again today. As my surgery date draws nearer I need this encouragement daily. I’m taking deep breaths and trying not to overthink it and stress out. So I will return daily for these words of encouragement and support from you and your comment section. 🥰🌹

I’ve said before, though kind of reluctant to admit, I really had almost no pain throughout. I have said many times,I’ve been blessed to never have a depressed day in my life, but I am just now, 11 months after, coming out of a cloud of sadness and a bit of despair. Also, such a lack of energy. I’m an energizer bunny, but spent many month, very tired and unmotivated. But all that is much improved now. When drs say a year or more, don’t beat yourself up if that’s what it takes.

Yes very true the emotional part of having a major joint surgery is something that needs to be talk more about. Because no matter how strong mentally you are it does gets you sooner or later. It sure has me.

I am at the end of week 4, and I can relate so much with this. I am very independent and to ask for help, see others go do things I can’t do yet, and my mind saying I want to do this but my body saying not today! It sucks! I think I’m sleeping well but I know I’m not. Listening to this video gives me hope. I just hope this next week starts to get easier!
