I mean it was picture day. That’s the military. Makes sense to dress up and look your best and stay clean. Probably orders from command to clean up that day. Unless you’re looking at a combat picture or post battle, I’m sure they tried to stay as clean as possible. Most of these picture look posed for the camera man and on base, not on an active campaign trail.

Exposure rates were 3 minutes, of course the photos were staged and planned. Photography was a new invention. Of course all the clothing was washed and looking their best, they were capturing a moment in time. Read some of the civil war letters, and gain some perspective on the Era.

I have one question why was there a mason symbol in the Union Soldiers mostly Masons were in the south while there was a mason symbol there that don't make no sense

Pictures took a lot longer to set up and was a big thing so yes they would have got dressed up and ready for a picture to be taken
