Drinks to avoid at night for improved quality of sleep 😴 💤 What you drink at night can make it difficult falling asleep or maintaining the required duration of sleep The following drinks have been strongly implicated 1. Coffee Caffeine containing drinks like coffee with one ounce of espresso that provides 63mg of caffeine is enough to keep you awake Caffeine is known to increase how long it takes you to fall asleep and reduces total sleep time Aim to have your last drink of coffee at least 6 to 8 hours before bedtime if it is known to affect your sleep. 2. Carbonated beverages. These range from caffeinated sodas to sugar free seltzer waters. The Caffeine content of these drinks may affect sleep while the fizzy bubbles may impair digestion also interfering with sleep. The gas in these drinks introduce air in the digestive tract and may lead to gastroesophageal reflux [acid reflux], which may affect sleep. 3. Citrus and Tomato juices Orange and tomato juices may trigger heartburn or worsen reflux symptoms in some people. Reflux pain or discomfort can interrupt sleep by reducing the quality and duration. If you love these juices, consider taking them earlier in the day to prevent sleep impairment. 4. Alcohol Though alcohol is a sedative, it doesn't lead to better quality of sleep. Alcohol delays REM sleep onset, reduces its duration and the overall quality of sleep. The more alcohol you drink, the worse the effects on your sleep.
