the biggest misconception about adhd? that it’s a lack of effort 🤍 here’s what gets missed: someone with adhd can be extremely motivated — genuinely wanting it, caring deeply, trying with everything they’ve got — and still not be able to get to the task. because the gap isn’t in how much they want it. it’s in the wiring. adhd is a disorder of regulation, not desire. the brain struggles to reliably turn intention into action, no matter how high the stakes or how much effort is poured in. so “just try harder” isn’t bad advice because people are lazy — it’s bad advice because effort was never the broken part. and that’s exactly why external structure helps more than willpower ever will: when the issue is regulation, not effort, you stop white-knuckling and start building supports that do the bridging for you. a focus timer like the ones on the Opal app (I have this linked in my bio because it’s my perineal favorite) is one of them — it carries the “start and stay on task” load your brain can’t force on command, so your effort finally has somewhere to land. 💬 how many times were you called “lazy” for something that was never about effort? save this and send it to someone who needs to stop blaming themselves. #adhdinwomen #executivedysfunction #neurodivergent #adhdawareness #latediagnosedadhd
