But Michael offered $30 million and won the deal for $47.5 million. ‎ ‎Paul was hurt. He had taught his friend about the business, and now Michael owned the songs Paul had helped create. ‎ ‎Years later, Paul asked Michael to pay him more money whenever his songs were used. Michael replied, “Oh Paul, that’s just business.” ‎ ‎In 1995, Michael merged “ATV” with Sony in a deal that made each side own half. MJ received about $95 million to $100 million for his half. After he died, his estate kept that share until Sony bought it for $750 million in 2016. ‎ ‎By then, the company controlled more than 750,000 songs. ‎ ‎Paul never tried to buy his songs back because he did not want to pay such a huge amount for music he had written himself. ‎ ‎But in 2017, Paul reached a deal with Sony. Under US copyright law, songwriters can take back certain rights to their songs after 35 years of signing it away.
