Steve
Steve "Disco" Makua was a South African football (soccer) legend, primarily known as a midfielder for Witbank Black Aces in the 1970s–1980s, with later spells at clubs including Giant Blackpool and Orlando Pirates. He earned the nickname “Disco” for his energetic, rhythmic playing style. He hailed from Emalahleni (formerly Witbank) in Mpumalanga and was regarded as a key figure and stern competitor in local and national football circles. After his playing days he remained involved in football development in the province. Makua died in a road accident in mid-February 2008 while travelling between Witbank and Middelburg. Tributes came from across South African football, including from Kaizer Chiefs (who noted their connection through Frank Makua), Witbank Spurs, and former teammates and coaches such as Augusto Palacios. Palacios recalled Makua warmly welcoming him to South Africa at Aces in 1985, leading the team to the inaugural Iwisa Soccer Spectacular win in 1989 (beating Orlando Pirates), and later assisting him abroad while recommending talents like John “Shoes” Moshoeu and Fani Madida.Kaizerchiefs He mentored a young Frank Makua (a later Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United and Bafana Bafana midfielder also nicknamed “Disco”). The two shared a hometown and surname and trained together, which led many people to wrongly assume Steve was Frank’s father—a misconception Frank has repeatedly clarified (his actual father was Paulos Makua). Steve spotted Frank’s talent after a KFC Schools Cup curtain-raiser and encouraged his professional career. In short, Steve “Disco” Makua is remembered as a Witbank Black Aces icon, a hard-working midfielder, a mentor, and a contributor to Mpumalanga football whose legacy lives on partly through the nickname carried by Frank Makua.
