A 30-year-old woman from Liverpool whose two dogs were left starving, emaciated, and severely neglected has been banned from keeping animals for 10 years. Liverpool Magistrates' Court heard that Danielle Southern, of Saunby Close, Garston, admitted two animal welfare offences after RSPCA officers discovered two young dogs suffering in her home. Two-year-old French Bulldog Benji and one-year-old Bichon Frise Pixie both scored just one out of nine on the veterinary body condition scale, the lowest possible score indicating complete emaciation. Benji weighed just 5.3 kilograms with bones jutting through his skin, while Pixie weighed only 2.9 kilograms beneath a mass of filthy, heavily matted fur. While Benji survived parvovirus and was nursed back to health to find a new home, Pixie was diagnosed with severe liver disease and had to be put to sleep to end her suffering. Southern was handed an 18-month community order, ordered to complete 20 rehabilitation days, ordered to pay £500 in costs, and disqualified from owning animals for a decade.
