@redwoodcenterforchildren: In my feels about Child maltreatment, their inability to be understood about it, and the helpful adults inability to stop it. Why are we so concerned about adult feelings that it’s okay to let child ab*se continue? #redwoodcenterforchildrenandfamilies #childcenteredplaytherapy #playtherapist #domesticabuseawareness #trauma

What do I do when the school says they’re “totally fine”… but my youngest (being assessed for autism—I’m autistic as is my other child) has meltdowns about going to school. says his life is “very bad” 💔. He tells his teacher he feels sick and she says “you don’t seem sick”. She says she doesn’t want to get him into bad habits. I’m separated from dad, who also says everything’s fine and doesn’t believe he’s autistic. My son calls me from dad’s near tears, saying he doesn’t want to go there anymore. I hate this 😭

I work in a school for children with trauma and mental health issues. There are only about 25 children across the whole school because the level of need (and violence) is high. Our headteacher has stopped us from sharing relevant pupil safeguarding information between staff in the name of protecting the children's data and it just feels so backwards. Most of the staff work and interact with every child across the school and we aren't getting the bigger picture about these kid's situations and it feels so deeply wrong to me. Sorry to vent it out on your post but your words have resonated with me.

In my state, reporting to CPS is such a joke. I’ve had CPS call parents and speak to them without ever talking to the child involved and then using that as enough evidence to close the case and move on. It’s all dependent on their funding and resources, not on children’s safety

Sounds kind of backwards, but this is part of why I’m homeschooling. The system is not set up to treat children as individuals with individual experiences (whether that be problems at home, neurodiversity, etc) to the extent that they are. It’s a privilege to not have to participate in it, and to allow your kid to observe the strengths and shortcomings of large scale systems like this from the outside without having it normalized.

I've been on both sides as a teacher and now as a therapist. I see schooling becoming less of a protective factor. School stopped being focused on child development and are more focused on performance. It's disheartening.

yah, I was teaching fresh out of college and 2 years into my own trauma therapy. I just couldn’t not see it everywhere. When I pointed it out, even with context and saying like “i know it could be many things not necessarily abuse but the signs of trauma are there” I was completely dismissed. I never could understand if I took the mandatory reporting of suspected abuse more literally then my peers or if they just had learned it was easier to ignore it. like i really thought admin would appreciate that i payed attention and cared about students. because that was the way it had been presented in training and in my classes.

It’s unfortunately because a lot of abuse is excused and normalized as punishment

My child hits when dysregulated. He was never abused. I’ve been seeking help since he’s 2. I’m so afraid people would think I mistreat him… but he has sensory sensitivities … certain situations are overwhelming to him… I don’t know where to turn to anymore.. 🫠😞

I’ve been a long time watcher of you. Big fan! I relate! I did 4 years as a CPS investigator. Eventually I left because I realized we were making things so much worse! I went and got my MSW and now I’m a therapist and (hopefully) making a MUCH healthier and helpful impact on children!!

I was one of those kids. I thought I was hiding it well but looking back as a counseling student, some teachers picked up on it and were kind and encouraging. This was in the 80s and I wish it were different.

So true I experienced it and left a TSS job for this reason! I reported abuse I actually saw a toddler girl being raped at recess under the slide by a boy and everyone acted like I was a liar and drama queen because CPS came and then they blackballed me from the case and encouraged me and suggested I quit. By my own managers also, and they told me I am getting too involved in my job! They just didn’t want to get a bad rep. I ended up leaving it was so emotionally traumatic and felt like I was the only one who cared to report abuse.

It’s exhausting to watch and know nothing will change it. We are mandated reporters and nothing happens when we report. Over and over I feel like I’m failing them

As a child who was being abused at home, no one listened to me. I told multiple adults. But we were in the south and hitting your kids was acceptable.

It’s good that some of us decide to stay in the school system, keep showing up for those kids, and building a safe space to be and for them to feel they can share. We also need people to keep showing up, documenting, and reporting so that cases can be built. We need people who care to stay in the school system because most of these kids never get to see a private therapist.

I am glad to hear someone speak on this. I was in the school system as a social worker for 3 years. That’s all I could handle before walking away to work privately with children and families.

I felt the same way in my teacher training and that's why I decides to start my own music school... it's work in progress, but I'd rather not work for systems that opress children

I had to leave a school environment because I couldn't pretend not to see the abuse happening by some teachers when multiple districts preferred to sweep it under the rug....or at most transfer the teacher to a different grade level.

while working daycare we got this 2 year old child that would say "im sorry" to everything we said to him to correct him. I mentioned that he's most likely being verbally abused and the lead teacher was like "I'll check it out" since it was a staff kid (kinda) staff member confirmed to teacher that he was being yelled at excessively at home "You're right Mira" I hate being right...

This is why I have a hard time whenever anyone asks me if I will go back to teaching. Also because of the trauma and abuse that teachers/staff were inflicting on students due to not being trauma informed. I could not advocate for my own kids or others while being a teacher.

Question: I work soooo hard to keep my son away from any conflict going on with me and his Dad. We’ve only argued in front of him once, and he was about 1 at the time. But he is so aggressive. He hits, bites. He’s 3, and will talk through things with me really well. Then bam, hitting again in a minute. Please tell me he’s just three with zero impulse control and is a boy??

the way that I feel this so deeply as a former child welfare worker that left that field because I couldn't make sound child centred decisions for these reasons. believing the child in a system designed to centre avoiding adults complaints is so heartbreaking.
