@interestingengineering: Columbia University and Germany's Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics are launching a $13.3 million center to combine the strengths of tokamaks and stellarators, fusion's two rival magnetic designs. From 2027, Columbia researchers will join experiments on Wendelstein 7-X and ASDEX Upgrade, tackling heat exhaust, sudden plasma transients and complex superconducting magnets. Fusion companies including Commonwealth Fusion Systems and Proxima Fusion are invited to take part.
