After being hospitalized with sepsis, my port had to be removed. The infection wasn’t something I caused — but because it was life-threatening, removing the port was the safest choice. Right now, my wound is packed and left open so it can heal properly from the inside out, and I’m following up with wound care every other day. For the last week, I’ve been living off of D5 through a peripheral IV (basically IV fluids with sugar) because sepsis feeds off of TPN, so I couldn’t run my nutrition safely. It’s been a hard adjustment, but it’s temporary. I now have a PICC line in my arm for the next month while I finish IV antibiotics and continue healing. Once I’m cleared, my team plans to place a tunneled Hickman line in my chest — it’s a bit different than a port and considered a lower-risk option for long-term TPN. I’ll miss my port — it made so much of this routine easier — but this is what’s best for me right now.
