Sometimes the person who craves affection the most is the same person who struggles to receive it. You want the hand holding yours. The unexpected hug. The kiss on the forehead. The hand resting on your back. The comfort of being pulled close without having to ask. You want physical affection that says, “I’m here. You’re wanted. You’re safe with me.” But when someone actually offers that closeness, you may find yourself tense, uncomfortable, guarded, or waiting for the moment it disappears. Maybe affection was inconsistent growing up. Maybe physical closeness came with conditions. Maybe someone once made you feel cherished with their touch and then used that same closeness to hurt you. So you learned to crave intimacy while simultaneously protecting yourself from it. Three hard truths: 1. You cannot keep longing for closeness while expecting someone to break through walls you refuse to acknowledge are there. 2. Not everyone who reaches for you is trying to hurt you, but not everyone who touches you deserves access to you. Discernment matters just as much as vulnerability. 3. If you constantly pull away when someone offers healthy affection, you may be protecting yourself from a danger that isn’t actually present in that moment. And here’s the question: Do you struggle to receive affection because the person in front of you isn’t making you feel safe, or because being vulnerable still feels dangerous even when they are? Be honest. Those are two very different things. Healing doesn’t mean forcing yourself to accept touch or ignoring your boundaries. It means learning that you can have boundaries without building walls around every part of yourself. You deserve affection that doesn’t come with pressure, manipulation, or uncertainty. You deserve to experience closeness without feeling like you’re surrendering your power. And you deserve to stop confusing emotional protection with emotional isolation. You shouldn’t have to choose between being loved and feeling safe. If you’re ready to start your healing journey, click the link in my bio.
