Walk across for 4 minutes, then retrace your steps. When the guard sees you, he'll think you came from the other side and will tell you to go back, thinking you're coming from the opposite direction.

idk but my most probable guess is that the guard still needs a full 5 minutes to try getting to him, but since the prisoner is 5 minutes ahead of the guard he managed to escape
