When I was 25, I suffered second-degree burns on my right leg, and for almost four months, I couldn’t walk. That was when I realized just how precious the simplest things in life can be. I dreamed of being able to go to the bathroom on my own, take a shower without help, simply stand on my own two feet, walk through a park, or stand by the stove and cook something for myself and my parents. And every single time, my dad would turn the wheelchair ride into a little race through the hospital corridors, just to make me laugh before the procedure, because he knew how much pain I was about to endure.
I’m 32 now, and I still remember everything so vividly. The pain, the fear, the helplessness, the endless tears. But more than anything, I remember the incredible warmth and love my parents surrounded me with. They literally became my legs when I couldn’t take a single step on my own.
I think that was when I truly understood what parental love means. Seven years have passed, but I still remember what it felt like to be a grown woman in my father’s arms, as
