Dear God, when I was 19 years old, I hit an old man crossing the street. Mind you, I’m 70 years old now. Immediately pulled over, and there he was lying in the road. I tried to keep myself together, but I had just hit someone. Called home and dad and sister came to scene. Ambulance came and took to hospital. Police said he reeked of alcohol, but would call me when they knew more. Went home to wait for call (no cell phones then). Police called said his name was Charlie and that he was inebriated and would not do blood test. He was homeless as well and quite elderly. He left hospital. I wasn’t charged with anything, but I guess I was fortunate. Next day, my dad and I went to the area of the accident to try and find Charlie and offer an apology or buy him a hot meal. No luck finding Charlie and not a good area to snoop around. Took me a while to drive again. Especially at dark. Decades have passed and I still remember Charlie with hopes that he’s forgiven me and knows how sorry I was. Rest in peace Charlie…Sorry 🙏🕯️✝️❤️
