The suspect is also facing a federal charge in a separate case, while investigators examine a possible connection to another highway incident. On October 14, 2026, Alyssa was driving on Interstate 170 in Overland, Missouri, on her way to a Halloween event at the St. Louis Zoo called Boo at the Zoo. According to prosecutors, a man fired a single shot into the back of her Buick Encore. Alyssa was struck, lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a concrete median. She was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Willie James Herndon, 43, from Texas, has been charged with first-degree m¥rder and armed criminal action in Missouri. Authorities say he had no known relationship with Alyssa. Her father, Robert Hickman, shared the family’s heartbreak as the charges were announced. “Alyssa was 17, excited about her life, excited about her future,” her father Robert Hickman said, as state charges were announced. “She had 60 days until she turned 18, and we were getting ready to take our first family vacation together to go to Disney for her to see her favorite person in the world, Princess Tiana, and unfortunately, she’s not going to get to do that any more. This was a senseless act.” INVESTIGATORS EXAMINE AN EARLIER INCIDENT Federal court documents also describe a separate highway incident reported on October 11, three days before Alyssa’s death. Police received a report that a vehicle had been struck by gunfire after exiting Interstate 55 in Missouri. Surveillance footage reportedly showed a white SUV leaving the area. Investigators recovered a cartridge casing at the scene. They are conducting tests to determine whether it came from the same weapon involved in Alyssa’s death. A connection between the two incidents has not been conclusively established by the reported ballistics evidence. ARREST AND FEDERAL CHARGE Authorities traced a vehicle resembling Herndon’s Buick Enclave from the earlier incident and the scene of Alyssa’s death to a Days Inn in Caseyville, Illinois. On October 16, officers approached Herndon’s wife, Taiya Herndon, 45, at the hotel. Court documents state that Willie emerged from the room and attempted to flee before being arrested. Prosecutors reported finding a rifle, ammunition, two license plates and handwritten notes describing police vehicles inside the hotel room. Herndon has also been charged in federal court in Illinois with being a felon in possession of a firearm. His wife has separately been charged with hindering prosecution in connection with Alyssa’s case. Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the fatal incident. The investigation into the earlier highway shooting remains important as investigators continue examining the available evidence.
