It has an important strategic position between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. History Crimea has a long and complex history. It was inhabited by ancient peoples including the Tauri, Scythians, Greeks, and Romans. Later, it became part of the Byzantine, Khazar, Mongol, and Ottoman spheres of influence. From the 15th century until the late 18th century, much of Crimea was controlled by the Crimean Khanate, a state closely connected to the Ottoman Empire. In 1783, the Russian Empire annexed Crimea. After the Russian Revolution, Crimea became part of the Russian SFSR within the Soviet Union. In 1954, the Soviet government transferred the Crimean Oblast from the Russian SFSR to the Ukrainian SSR. Crimea after the USSR When the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, Crimea remained within independent Ukraine. It received autonomous status as the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, while Sevastopol had a separate administrative status. In February–March 2014, Russian forces took control of Crimea. A referendum was held on 16 March 2014, after which Russia incorporated Crimea. Ukraine and most countries in the world do not recognize this annexation and consider Crimea to be part of Ukraine under Russian occupation. Russia, in contrast, considers Crimea part of the Russian Federation. Geography Crimea is known for: • the Crimean Mountains in the south; • the Black Sea and Sea of Azov; • a relatively mild climate on the southern coast; • cities such as Simferopol, Sevastopol, Yalta, Kerch, and Feodosia; • major historical and military importance because of its position in the Black Sea. #база #чечня #россия #based #wellwellwell - @51_51_1488
