@anyi.manchester.u: đš Carragher on Bruno Fernandes: âIâve been listening to this argument about Bruno Fernandes for months now, and I donât understand what some people are trying to prove. Theyâve been telling us heâs the problem at United. That the team would be better without him. That everything goes through him, that United canât function properly when heâs playing. Fine. Thatâs their argument. Well, he didnât play today, did he? He sat on the bench for 90 minutes, and they lost 3-0 to Bournemouth. So what happened? Where was this brilliant United team weâve been promised once Bruno Fernandes was taken out of it? Because I watched the game. I didnât see it. And before somebody starts telling me, âWell, Jamie, they werenât playing particularly well when Bruno was starting either.â I know that. Iâve got eyes. But thatâs a completely different argument. You told us Bruno was the reason United were struggling. You didnât say he was one of several players who needed to improve. You said he was holding the team back. Thereâs a difference. I remember having this conversation with somebody who was convinced United needed to move on from him. I asked him, âRight, you sell Bruno tomorrow. What happens next?â He said, âThe team becomes more balanced.â I said, âAnd whoâs creating the chances?â He couldnât answer me. âWhoâs getting the assists? Whoâs taking responsibility when the teamâs struggling? Whoâs going to produce something when nobodyâs had a decent effort on goal?â Nothing. And thatâs what annoys me about this discussion. People talk about getting rid of players as if the moment you remove somebody, all the problems disappear with him. Itâs nonsense. Bruno was producing extraordinary numbers last season. Creating chances, getting assists, winning individual awards, carrying enormous responsibility in a team that wasnât functioning properly. Everybody was happy to celebrate those performances. Now his form has dropped, and suddenly heâs responsible for every problem. How does that work? Iâve criticised Bruno. Iâve questioned his body language, his decision making, his leadership. But I can criticise a player without pretending heâs the reason an entire football club has been struggling for years. Thatâs where people lose me. And the funny thing is, Carrick had him warming up today. He was getting himself ready, but he never came on. Iâm glad he didnât, actually. Because now we can have this conversation without somebody finding a way to blame him for the result. Although Iâm sure somebody will try. Theyâll probably tell us he looked miserable on the bench and that affected the other players. You laugh, but thatâs where weâve got to. United have problems all over the pitch. Players making mistakes, poor decisions, a lack of urgency, not enough quality in important moments. You donât fix all that by dropping one midfielder. If youâre telling me Bruno isnât good enough anymore, fair enough. Make your case. Tell me who should replace him and why that player would improve Manchester United. Thatâs a football discussion. But donât tell me heâs destroying the team, then watch the team get beaten 3-0 without him and start explaining why his absence proves absolutely nothing. You canât have it both ways. Bruno isnât above criticism. Nobody at United should be. But some supporters have spent so long trying to prove heâs the problem that theyâve forgotten to look at the actual problems. And thatâs a dangerous place for a football club to be. Because one day Bruno will leave. Thatâs football. And if United are still playing like this, who are they going to blame then? The man who isnât even at the club anymore? At some point, you have to stop looking for one person to blame and start asking why the entire team isnât good enough. Today, Bruno didnât kick a ball. Manchester United still lost 3-0. Maybe itâs time some people started asking themselves whether theyâve been arguing about the wrong thing.â [ This is the source @ChinoUTD ]
