You forget the part where multiple regens lead to carbon deposits that can't get burnt away. It eventually leads to a failed emissions component and is only manufactured to work until you're outside of warranty.

So let’s dump a bunch of diesel fuel into this super-heated canister and vaporize the soot into the atmosphere. Before DPF, it still went into the atmosphere, but didn’t waste diesel doing it.
