He was only 15. He arrived from Ghana exactly one year ago yesterday for a better life. His name was Javits Frimpong. Thursday, October 29th, just before 9:30 AM,near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in Claremont, right by Crotona Park just around the corner from the apartment shared with his 60-year-old dad, a yellow cab driver. That morning, he was doing what he was supposed to do walking to Dreamyard Preparatory. One shot to the stomach. He kept going, ran a full block before collapsing. Officers rushed him to St. Barnabas Hospital where he died. The call came from the school principal. The same principal who had called three days earlier about a fight.
"Two boys were fighting with my son and the two boys got suspended," the 60-year-old said on the phone from the hospital, voice shaking. The suspension was for a week. That was when the quiet teenager finally opened up about what had been happening at lunch. “Dad, any time I am going to lunch, that guy keep on bullying me. I have been reporting him several times," he had told him. And the message from the school leader was clear: “The principal told me Javits is innocent. Javits is innocent. He was defending himself." He described the 15-year-old as precious, very clever, but very reserved. Someone who didn't go out, didn't know anyone here, stayed on his phone. "My son is very quiet. My son didn't talk." That last morning haunts him. He woke the teenager up, the boy opened the door for him, and they parted. The only reminder given was to get to school on time. There was no goodbye, no I love you. Still at the hospital, trying to process it, he kept saying: “It's not easy for me. He's my everything. I'm here with him alone." He believes he knows who did this, saying the victim didn't have enemies here except for the trouble at school. "I don't think they are going to go free for killing an innocent child," he said, urging those responsible to surrender. Then came the call to Ghana, where his wife still lives. “She couldn't talk. She's crying. She said unless she see that body, she don't believe it." A mother thousands of miles away, unable to speak, crying non-stop, refusing to believe her baby is gone until she sees him herself. NYPD is now searching for three boys, ages 16 to 18, last seen in all black with blue surgical masks, captured on surveillance fleeing the area. No arrests have been announced and a motive has not been officially confirmed. Neighbors are shaken. Cecile Johnson, a mom of a 9-year-old, said, "It's devastating. It's sad." Modesto Arriola added, "Over here, there's no control." Another resident, Carla, said simply, "He was just going to school, like doing what he was supposed to do." A 15-year-old who was innocent, defending himself, reporting the bullying, walking to school. Rest in heavenly peace, Javits Frimpong. You deserved so much more. You were innocent. You were doing what you were supposed to do. You will never be forgotten. 🕊️🙏🏽 Anyone with info is asked to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. #ghanatiktok🇬🇭 #JavitsFrimpong #Bronx #NewYork #DreamyardPrep
