@rulerlesscasey: Corrective feedback is really heavy if you're trying to overhaul someone's personality. Way easier to simply address the behavior. Still awkward, but much more respectful. #newmanagerbasics #peoplemanager #feedback #professionaldevelopment #skit

As a neurodivergent, I struggle when trying to hop in conversations. I try to wait for a natural pause but then I end up cutting people off. Or I end up really quiet because I don’t want to cut people off. Any tips?

“Be more courteous” is subjective. “Don’t talk over people” is a specific behavior.

The amount of times I’ve said, “They don’t think you’re mean, it’s literally your job to give them direction right now. I need you to do your job.”

I didn’t even realize me doing that was a sign of ADHD until I was diagnosed late in life. It usually means I’m really engaged and interested in the conversation and I just want it to move faster. So I just sit now. Sit and let other people talk.

people that lean to extroversion think out loud in meetings people that lean to introversion. may need to be asked their opinion in a meeting or after the meeting.

depends on the person.. some ppl will take a boss correcting them more personally. I remember a lesson that my dad taught me w teachable moments: when youre in a position of authority, and you want them to actually listen.. sometimes, its better to just expose them to the natural consequences than imposing ones, yourself.. i was respectful as a kid (for the most part), but i had an issue w wandering.. I wasnt up to anything; i just wanted my space.. i didnt need supervision all the time bc i didnt do stupid things to show i couldnt be trusted and felt i deserved more freedom.. my dad knew that he couldve just gotten onto me, but he didnt lecture me abt it.. or say anything abt it rly. Hed just put on movies like "Mr. Brooks" and "Taken" to help me better understand why it wasnt a good idea (i was like 10 or 11 so he played the censored version on TnT to keep it age appropriate).. i also remember my dad playing a lot of Dateline when i was growing up.. i dont think it was just bc he liked the genre (he did, but i dont think it was the only reason tho). i think it was also to show me stuff like that can happen, and there are sick ppl out there who wanna cause harm to others and do ugly things.. evn to kids. Not long after, I didnt seem to have the same desire to wander off by myself. I think it worked bc he didnt try to tell me wht to do or tell me anything rly.. he just showed me what he was trying to keep from happening but could happen if i kept making that choice.. rather than just lecturing me abt it.. the same logic can apply here. instead of telling him not to interrupt, wait for him to experience the natural consequences of his actions and for him to come crying to you abt it later -- after he rubs ppl the wrong way.. then ask him if hes rly shocked by the fact that hes having issues w his coworkers whn youve noticed him constantly interrupting thm when theyre talking.. or wait for one of his peers to get fed up w it & let him know whts good. Then be like "dont come crying to me.. when you chose to keep talking over them bc id be mad, too." or you could dress it up more professionally if youd prefer to use more tact

It's best to be specific. If someone told me to be more courteous I would not interpret that as " stop interrupting ". Heck sometimes I don't realize I'm doing it. Be specific, give examples. Also fuck people's feelings.

"I feel awkward doing my job" Okay, now imagine how your team feels watching you allow that.

Sorry, but i respectfully disagree with this one video. Supposedly senior ICs shouldn’t need a director level to sit in and moderate every meeting they have with colleagues. Working team meetings shouldn’t have to have the ICs AND every functional lead in attendance. And unfortunately, I took the straightforward and corrective approach and had to deal with an employee relations investigation that put my bonus at risk while I pulled together transcripts and videos demonstrating that this wasn’t targeted behavior. One of the most stressful points of my career and the lesson for me is that if you want to put someone on a PIP, do it, with HR and paperwork, and be sure as hell you’re ready to pull the trigger at the end

You have to take it one step further you can't just return to the one interrupted because then the interrupter (lets call him jim) doesnt learn anything. if you want Jim to change, you have to give him the attention he wants. *jim interrupts "woah, hold on, everyone. jim has some really important information that's so mission critical we HAVE to hear it right this exact moment. Please Jim, tell us the emergency information while we still have time..." and then if hes still willing to speak you let him and dont acknowledge what he says at all ..... and THEN you ask the person interrupted to continue. if jim has a complaint its met with "he was interrupting in the middle of somebodies sentence, I assumed it was tremendously important to be so blatantly disrespectful to his coworkers.... otherwise why would he feel treating his coworker this way was ok? I dont want to assume the worst about people so I stay positive and assume jim had emergency information that just couldnt wait to disclose" now jim has some fun conversations with hr and has been socially conditioned to sit down and shut the fuck up, or he quits.... a win is a win.
