Local Market Shop & Save is preparing to open at 1331 N. Rand Road in Palatine’s Park Place Shopping Center, across from Walmart. The approximately 76,000 square foot grocery store will occupy the former Whole Foods location, which closed in 2013 after relocating to Kildeer. So what’s taking so long? According to information presented to the Palatine Village Council in January 2026, the project encountered significant construction complications. Raising the building’s existing roof proved considerably more difficult and expensive than anticipated. Rising steel costs, material delivery delays, and necessary revisions to construction plans created additional setbacks. The original completion deadline of October 31, 2025, was extended to June 30, 2026. That deadline has now passed as well. In January, village officials indicated that most exterior work was complete and construction had shifted indoors. However, these October 7 aerial photographs still show boarded entrance areas, despite the exterior signage being installed months ago. The redevelopment also involves public funding through Palatine’s Rand Road Corridor Tax Increment Financing District, with the maximum available assistance reduced from $2.5 million to $2.1 million. As of October 2026, the company’s website still lists Palatine as “Coming Soon,” with no confirmed opening date.
