From Daboya to the Presidency: The Story of the Smock What if a simple piece of cloth could tell a nation's story? In this documentary, I travel to Daboya in Ghana’s Savannah Region to discover the fascinating story behind one of Ghana’s most important traditional garments, the Smock, also known as Fugu or Batakari. From preparing the threads and traditional dyeing to the rhythmic work of the loom, joining the woven strips, sewing, and the final finishing touches, we follow the process of making the smock from start to finish. But this is more than just a story about clothing. The Ghanaian smock carries generations of culture, identity, craftsmanship and pride. It has evolved from traditional northern Ghanaian attire into a garment worn by chiefs, ordinary citizens and Ghanaian leaders. We also look at the historic connection between the smock and Ghana's Presidency, including the famous images of Kwame Nkrumah and other independence leaders wearing handwoven smocks during Ghana's independence celebrations in 1957. Today, the tradition continues to evolve, with growing interest in Fugu and renewed efforts to promote Ghanaian-made fashion and cultural heritage. So, how is a traditional smock actually made? Join me as we journey from the loom to the finished garment, from Daboya to the Presidency. This is the story of the Ghanaian Smock. #ghana #ghanaculture #ghanahistory #GhanaSmock #Fugu #Batakari #Daboya #northernghana #SavannahRegion #ghanaheritage #africanculture #AfricanFashion #GhanaFashion #TraditionalWeaving #Handwoven #madeinghana #ghanatourism #culturalheritage #kwamenkrumah #FuguDay watch full video on youtube https://youtu.be/gnRGDYc3WGo
