As a teacher, if I could resign today, I would. The disrespect from parents and learners is becoming unbearable. Expectations of teachers are sky-high, yet all the accountability falls on us. Parents and learners are rarely held accountable for their behaviour or responsibilities. Teachers are expected to do everything, yet receive very little respect in return.

As an experienced Foundation Phase educator, I disagree. Every student teacher I've worked with has struggled with basic letter formation and phonics knowledge. How can we trust that colleges and universities are adequately preparing future teachers when they enter our classrooms without the fundamental skills needed to teach young learners?

I taught for 52 years. Today teachers suffer because of disrespectful learners, admin work, workload, sport after school and some other extra mural after school. For what teachers do and what is expected from them, their salaries are not enough
