@stak5: Al Leiter reveals the truth about radar guns and why it seems like pitchers today throw so much faster. The former pitcher explains that guns used to sit behind home plate, while newer tracking systems measure speed closer to release. He says a pitcher releasing the ball roughly six feet out gets a higher reading than the old method would show. Leiter says that change gave nearly every pitcher a bump of about a mile and a half per hour. He tells it with experience, giving fans context on how technology changed the way velocity is compared across eras.
They just refuse to admit the athletes now are better than before. The mechanics of today's game are much more efficient. By their logic Nolan Ryan is throwing 110+mph which isn't possible

Chasing velo is the #1 reason for arm injuries and pitch counts and the demise of pitchers who are now replaced by throwers. Fix the game at the youth level.

So how did guys like scherzer and verlander throw harder pre Trackman. Love leiter but guys do throw harder today on average way more and it’s not bc the guns. Maybe the top guys like ryan and Randy we’re throwing 101 102

When they measured Nolan Ryan with the radar gun, it was targeted at the plate. Not from his release. Those are facts.

Athletes level up. If Randy Johnson was born in 2000 he would be be throwing harder today than he did in the 90s.

John Smoltz threw hard when he was an all star reliever and then he would Pitch when he was a Cy Young pitcher

My dad would NEVER let me even attempt to throw a curve ball when I was 10-13 years old. He said exactly what AL is saying now; your arm isn't meant for that action yet. Never understood it, but I threw fastballs only 🤷🏻♂️which is what led to me being so accurate because I never had off speed pitches

Now it takes pitchers 30+ pitches to get out of an inning. Then bullpen game by the 4th. Imagine going to an NFL game and the starting quarterbacks didnt play after halftime? This is what baseball is now

and this training to throw harder is why people cannot survive longer than 4 innings in most cases. starters never finish a game todsy, but 30 years ago they finished a good portion of games.

This breakdown by Al is the perfect example of how old heads can reasonably critique the current state of the game without coming off as a hater.

Al had that whole spiel about perceived velocity but failed to mention it’s measured separately in statcast. Thats not what is being shown during broadcasts.

I sat in the dugout all of 2000 and watched Mike McDougal throw 97-99 and it was straight gas. I’ve seen that “same velo” at college and big league games the last 5 years and McDougal without a doubt threw harder.
