@anatomyofai: You may not be voting in Brazil today, but you should be watching. . During my PhD I studied the fallout of Brazil’s military dictatorship: 21 years of censorship, torture, and disappearances, backed by the United States. . Today the son of a man who dedicated his impeachment vote to Dilma Rousseff’s torturer, and who is now serving 27 years for plotting a coup, is in a runoff for the presidency. . This election has a lot of similarities to the systems that will shape your local elections. Meta is facing allegations in Brazil’s electoral court that its AI and algorithms favored Flávio Bolsonaro. Zuckerberg has called Latin America’s courts “secret courts” and asked Washington to help fight them. . Flávio went to the Oval Office offering rare earths, the minerals inside the data centers that run these AI systems. And under the last Bolsonaro government, 570 Yanomami children died as illegal miners poisoned their rivers with mercury. . REMEMBER: the Amazon makes rain for an entire continent and stores carbon the whole planet depends on. What happens in Brazil tonight reaches all of us. . In 1973, Chico Buarque and Gilberto Gil wrote “Cálice,” a song where chalice sounds like cale-se, shut up. The regime cut their microphones on stage. We can learn a few things from them today. .
