I joke a lot about what I’ve been through, but deep down, it has ruined my nervous system and altered my brain chemistry in ways I’m still trying to understand. I make people laugh about being paralyzed. I crack jokes about my ventilator, my wheelchair, and the absurdity of living in a body that doesn’t cooperate with me. And most of the time, I’m genuinely laughing too. But what people don’t always see is the weight behind the humor. The trauma. The grief. The life I lost in a split second. The version of myself I never got to become. The battles I’ve fought quietly while making the world believe I’ve got it all figured out. I’ve spent more than two decades learning how to live with something I never asked for. And while I’ve found tremendous joy, purpose, gratitude, and love along the way, that doesn’t mean the experience hasn’t changed me. You can be grateful for your life and still grieve what happened to it. You can be strong and still be exhausted. You can inspire thousands of people and still have moments when you need someone to remind YOU that everything is going to be okay. My humor isn’t fake. My happiness isn’t an act. And my gratitude is absolutely real. But so is my pain. I’ve learned that being positive doesn’t mean pretending the hard stuff doesn’t exist. It means refusing to let the hard stuff be the only thing that exists. So yes, I’ll keep cracking jokes. I’ll keep laughing at the ridiculousness of my circumstances. I’ll keep finding reasons to smile. Not because what happened to me was funny, but because I refuse to let it steal my laughter, too. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: You can love the life you’ve built while still mourning the life you lost. ❤️ #spinalcordinjury #grief #lossimpson #quadriplegic #differentlife
