it's such a pickle because on the one hand, Ellis was such an exacting verbally abusive mother with such high unrealistic expectations and Thatcher was just a weak man who couldn't be alone. he was always miserable without a partner, his parenting always suffers when he's alone and he drinks. alcoholism is a sickness I get that but he really was just a jerk to his daughters
