It's because there are real vampires in recorded history! Although they are mostly just corpses in various stages of decomposition that medieval peasants didn't understand, or died surrounding strange events that can now be explained. No actual real vampires have been recorded as you know them. They're smart enough to not give themselves away. Fictitious vampires actual misrepresent us a ton so there's a surprisingly big difference between the two!
