@thepottymouthguru: PART 2: You took a break from the argument. Your body has settled. But what the FUCK are you supposed to do with everything going on in your head? Because you can calm your nervous system and STILL walk back into that conversation ready to defend yourself, blame your partner, or have the exact same fight. Here’s how to work with your thoughts and emotions BEFORE you reconnect: 1️⃣ NAME WHAT YOU’RE ACTUALLY FEELING. Get specific. Are you angry, hurt, ashamed, misunderstood, afraid, or feeling unfairly accused? You can experience several emotions at once. Naming them helps you understand what you’re working with. 2️⃣ EXAMINE THE STORY YOU’RE TELLING YOURSELF. Ask yourself: • What actually happened? • What meaning did I attach to it? • What evidence supports my interpretation? • What else could be true? Your interpretation might be accurate! The skill is learning to examine it rather than automatically reacting to it. 3️⃣ IDENTIFY WHAT YOU’RE PROTECTING. What feels threatened? Your competence? Your worth? Your need to be understood? Your sense of fairness? Understanding what you’re defending can help you recognize why the conversation feels so emotionally charged. 4️⃣ DECIDE HOW YOU WANT TO RESPOND. Before returning, ask: • Can I listen without immediately defending myself? • Can I acknowledge my part without collapsing into shame? • Can I express my feelings without invalidating theirs? • Can I stay curious even when I disagree? 5️⃣ CHECK WHETHER YOU’RE READY TO RECONNECT. You don’t need to feel perfectly calm. You need enough emotional capacity to hear something uncomfortable and choose your response. If you need more time, communicate that and agree on when you’ll return. The goal isn’t to convince yourself your partner is right or that your feelings don’t matter. It’s to stop letting automatic interpretations and defensive reactions control what happens next. Knowing WHY you react is valuable. Learning HOW to respond differently is where the real work happens. Which is harder for you: calming your body or getting out of the mental spiral? ❤️🤟🏻🌿 #EmotionalRegulation #RelationshipSkills #Defensiveness

Thank you. This is right on time for me. I am also struggling with the meaning making thoughts being so loud I can not be productive in the conversation at all. The conversation just becomes fuel for an even bigger fire.

I get stuck in my narrative. Journaling and venting to my trusty friends helps get me out of the loop.

You can calm your body down and STILL be mentally preparing for another fight. Before going back, ask yourself: What am I feeling? What story am I telling myself? What am I trying to protect? And how do I actually WANT to respond? You don’t have to agree with your partner to stop reacting defensively. Which of these is hardest for you?

Thank you 🥰 Just hear the question and stop assuming you know it means something else. Just answer the words you heard. It's much less stressful and teaches you to think about your words. Mean what you say and say what you mean 🥰
